Polavaram project is a multipurpose irrigation project. The primary motive behind the construction of this project was to overcome the deficiency of water. This would require a combined network of 30 river links. After 4 chief ministers rule over the Andhra state, Polavaram project is still in the dream state only. Chandrababu Naidu said that the project would be completed by 2018 at any cost but the Union government said the project cannot be completed before 2021 in the current situations.
In a reply to Congress Rajya Sabha member Renuka Chowdary’s question, Sanjiv Kumar Baliyan, the Union water resource minister said that only 1900 crores have been spent on Polavaram project past 3 years and only 24 % of main canal works have been completed. More than 96% of the work has to be completed for the project to be able to release water.
The current pace at which the project is moving, Polavaram project wouldn’t stand to see the light before 2021. Even Chandra Babu Naidu seems to have lost hopes that the project would be completed by 2018
